Parents’ Association Officers Elected at Prairie View A&M University

Homecoming 2010 was a huge success for Prairie View A&M University as more than 20K alumni, friends and students enjoyed the week-long festivities October 10-16. Among the persons participating in the events were the parents and guardians of the students.

Mrs. Glenda Jones, Director, Career and Outreach Services, along with Mr. Frederick V. Roberts, Assistant  Director for Career Services and Parent Association Coordinator, welcomed the parents and students.

Several parents and guardians came to the campus for the Parent’s Roundup Meeting. Some of the parents expressed much enthusiasm for the association and indicated their desires to work with the university. They also got a chance to share ideas and address issues impacting the students.  Part of the roundup was the election of officers for the Parents Council.  The parents reviewed the Draft Constitution and By-Laws for the Association and made some changes.

Persons who offered to serve and were elected to the positions include:  Tamitha Blackmon (Chair), Cherryl J. Rawls (1st Vice Chair), Fauvette  Jones (2nd Vice Chair), Diann Williams, (Treasurer), Valencia Scott (Communications), Kathy Luster, (Student Affairs), Paul Jones, Jr. (Career Development) and Randy Luster (Development).

Following the election of officers the group had a working lunch and began to develop plans to promote the association and involve the parents. They agreed that the council will meet the 2nd Thursday of each month via telephone conference call and or webinar when feasible.

 Some of the program ideas suggested for the Association includes the following:
a. Launching a campus-wide recycling project;
b. Sale of care packages during final exams.
c. Developing a “Walk for Education” project;
e. Sponsoring movie night for students;
f. Securing the video gaming bus for students to use.

Other items addressed were ways to involve other parents, ideas on what parents can do to eliminate teachers cancelling classes, establishing a scholarship fund, parents participation in orientation programs, establishing parent clusters, working with the recruitment office.

Mr. Roberts thanked the members for their commitment to the association.  Each officer received a profile form so that information can be posted along with a picture on the parents’ website.
